The Grassroom DTLA: A Wedding Venue for Nature Lovers in the Heart of LA

I only review venues my clients will benefit from, not build relationships with vendors for more work. This is no exception. You will only read what I truly believe in, and I hope this blog will help you make decisions for one of the happiest days of your life.

I recently had the honor of photographing a wedding at The Grassroom DTLA. Wow, it is such a beautiful venue. The ceremony space looked stunning, the reception area was very pretty, the bridal suite had so much character, and every corner was a photographer’s dream.

Before I dive deeper into The Grassroom DTLA location, what I loved about it, and what I wasn’t a big fan of, let me introduce myself. I am a Las Vegas-based Adventure Wedding Photographer. I often go out to nature to photograph and film highlight videos of adventure weddings in places like Death Valley and Yosemite for nearby elopements and the Dolomites, Italy, Iceland, and Kenya for international destination adventure weddings. Many couples reading this blog post likely love nature and want a nature-themed wedding. If you would like to see more of my work, check out my portfolio on this website or on Instagram.

So let’s see if The Grassroom DTLA will be a good fit for you.

Venue Overview

Location

The Grassroom DTLA is located in the heart of the Art District in DTLA:
Address: 616 East 4th St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Being located in the Art District, there are plenty of nearby spots for unique first look or couple portraits, all within a five-minute drive. The drive for guests to this part of LA is a breeze as there’s usually not much traffic once you’re off the freeway.

Description

When I first saw photos of this wedding venue, I described it as a bit bohemian. However, anything from subtle pink and white weddings to bold weddings with character would work well here.

Capacity

The venue can accommodate about 125 seated guests and up to 200 standing guests. The wedding I photographed had about 80 people and felt pretty full. 100 seated guests would be comfortable without feeling cramped.

Amenities

I am not 100% sure if they have catering options. The wedding I attended had separate catering, so you should ask The Grassroom DTLA directly about this. They did provide a valet parking service, making everything super easy. The bridal suite, called the Madonna Suite, has bold wallpapers with plants and natural light from a dome window. It’s perfect for photography. If I could nitpick one thing, it’s slightly small, especially with a large bridal party. The venue also has a private alleyway with the LA skyline in the background and an entry court that could be used for cocktail hours in the summer.

The Grass Room DTLA Aesthetic Appeal

Unique Features

The highlight of this space is the two arches with pink sliding doors between the ceremony and reception spaces. Many murals blend well with the surroundings, and the tropical plants make you forget you’re in the middle of DTLA.

Indoor and Outdoor Spaces

The ceremony location, the Grassroom Greenhouse, is an indoor space with glass ceilings. The retractable shade can cover the sun if needed, providing flexibility for different times of the year. The reception area has many characteristics, although less bright than the ceremony area. The alleyway, bridal suite, and entry court are fantastic photo opportunities.

Decor Flexibility

The rails on the ceilings seem to offer good customization options for different wedding themes and styles.

Photography Opportunities

Because you’re on a photographer’s website, I should also cover the photography aspect of this venue, right? This venue was my favorite to photograph this year. I’ve photographed luxury weddings at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas, a gorgeous chapel in Hawaii, and nature-filled country club weddings. The Grassroom DTLA stands out due to the natural light from the ceiling windows in the greenhouse and the bridal suite. Even after sunset, the neutral-colored walls bounce the light beautifully. Every wall connects cohesively yet offers different looks depending on the angle.

Vendor Coordination

The wedding coordinators at The Grassroom DTLA are amazing. I haven’t heard a single complaint or concern from the couple or guests all night. Everything was on point, allowing everyone to enjoy the wedding. This level of detail and coordination isn’t easy to achieve, and it shows they have a lot of experience. You should inquire with them about your dates.

Why You Recommend The Grassroom DTLA

Whether the groom is wearing a blue velvet dinner jacket or a maroon suit, the bride is wearing a boho train lace dress or a classy simple silk wedding dress; anything would go well here. The venue’s natural and well-designed elements blend everything nicely. The great venue, great coordinators, and great location make it a top choice, especially for guest sizes under 100. And did I mention there’s another event venue called Valentine, the Grassroom’s sister space, for larger events?
