Why You Don’t Have to Choose: The Traditional Wedding + Adventure Engagement Hybrid

March 24, 2026
Guides

You’ve been staring at those photos again — the ones with the couple standing on the edge of a cliff at sunrise, her dress catching the wind, the entire world stretched out behind them. Your heart races. That’s what I want.

But then you think about your mom. Your dad. The aunties. The 150-person guest list that’s been growing since the day you got engaged. In your family, a wedding isn’t just about the two of you — it’s a celebration that honors everyone who raised you, supported you, and prayed for this moment. And you love that. You really do.

So you feel stuck. Like you have to choose between honoring your family and honoring your adventurous spirit.

Here’s what I want you to hear: you don’t have to choose.

There’s a way to have the grand, beautiful traditional wedding your family dreams of and get those jaw-dropping, muddy-boots, wind-in-your-hair photos that make your soul sing. It’s called the adventure engagement session — and it might be the best decision you make in your entire wedding journey.

What Is an Adventure Engagement Session?

Forget what you think you know about engagement photos. This isn’t a one-hour session at a local park with matching outfits and a golden retriever (no shade — those are lovely too).

An adventure engagement session is essentially an elopement experience — without the legal paperwork (or can be)

Imagine this: You wake up at 2:00 AM. Start getting your hair and makeup done with eyes half-opened. Even after done, it’s still dark outside. You and your partner pile into the car with your photographer and start driving toward the desert — or the mountains, or a slot canyon you’ve only ever seen on Instagram. By the time the sun starts to rise, you’re standing on top of the world in a flowing dress or your favorite suit, completely alone with the person you love most.

No guests. No timeline pressure. No coordinator tapping their earpiece. Just the two of you, the landscape, and hours of uninterrupted time to simply be together.

These sessions typically last anywhere from 4 to 10 hours. We hike. We explore. We chase the light. We stop for coffee. We laugh when the wind destroys your hair for the fifth time. And somewhere in all of that — in the real, unscripted moments — we capture something extraordinary.

Why the “Hybrid” Approach Works Perfectly

Here’s why more and more couples — especially those balancing cultural expectations with personal dreams — are choosing to do both a traditional wedding and an adventure engagement session:

1. You Honor Your Family

Your parents have been dreaming about your wedding day, too. In many cultures — Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, and so many more — a wedding is a family milestone. It’s not just about you walking down the aisle; it’s about your grandmother seeing you in that hanbok or that red dress. It’s about your dad making a toast in front of 300 people who watched you grow up.

The traditional wedding gives your family everything they need. And you get to be fully present for it — because you already got your moment.

2. You Get Your Epic Art

Those sweeping landscape photos in Death Valley, Yosemite, or Zion? They’re yours. And here’s a beautiful bonus: you can display them at your traditional wedding reception. Imagine your guests walking into the ballroom and seeing a massive canvas of the two of you standing in front of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes at sunrise. It becomes a conversation piece — a bridge between your two worlds.

3. You Practice Being Photographed

This is the one nobody talks about, and it might be the most important benefit of all.

Spending an entire day exploring a national park with your photographer builds immense trust. You learn how to move together, how to relax your shoulders, and how to look at each other without feeling awkward. By the time your traditional wedding day arrives, you’re not nervous about the camera anymore. You’re old friends with it.

I can’t tell you how many couples have told me, “Our wedding photos were so much better because we’d already done the adventure session.”

4. You Get Two Completely Distinct Vibes

Your final gallery will have an incredible variety. Wild, untamed nature shots next to elegant, classic celebration moments. Desert sunrises and ballroom chandeliers. Hiking boots and heels. Your love story told in its full, beautiful range.

Real Story: How Eunice & Doohyun Did Both

Eunice and Doohyun are the perfect example of this hybrid approach — and honestly, their story is one of my all-time favorites.

Eunice and Doohyun first found me through an astrophotography post on my Instagram. They saw those images — the Milky Way stretching over the desert, a couple silhouetted against a sky full of stars — and knew they wanted to create something like that for themselves. That’s what brought them to me in the first place.

But like so many Korean couples, they also felt that familiar pull in two directions. They dreamed of something wild and adventurous, but they had a big, beautiful community of friends and family who wanted to celebrate with them. Saying no to either one wasn’t an option.

So we did both. And because they specifically wanted astrophotography, we planned an overnight session — the only way to truly capture the desert sky. It changed everything.

The Adventure Engagement Session: Death Valley, Overnight

We left Las Vegas around 9:00 PM on a warm summer evening and drove straight into the desert. While most people were asleep, we spent the night under the stars at Death Valley, capturing astrophotography — just the three of us, the Milky Way, and complete silence.

As the sky started to shift around 4:30 AM, we made our way to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes for sunrise. Eunice wore a striking red dress against the golden dunes — the contrast was absolutely stunning. As the morning light warmed up, she changed into a floral dress, and we continued to Zabriskie Point, stopping along the iconic desert road in between for some of my favorite shots of the entire session.

By 10 or 11 AM, we were driving back to Vegas — exhausted, sandy, and grinning from ear to ear. It was, without exaggeration, one of the best adventure engagement sessions I’ve ever photographed.

The main image they love and wanted to get from the moment they booked me. The milkyway photo of couple in it.

A quick note: an overnight session like Eunice and Doohyun’s is one of many ways to do an adventure engagement session — it’s not the only way. Every session I plan is built entirely around what matters most to you and what sounds like the most fun. Whether that’s a sunrise hike, a sunset beach session, or a full overnight under the stars, we design it together.

The Traditional Wedding: Lake Las Vegas Hilton, November

Six months later, Eunice and Doohyun had their traditional wedding at the Lake Las Vegas Hilton — a gorgeous venue with a chapel-style ceremony space. About 150 of their closest friends and family gathered for the celebration. The ceremony was held indoors, and the reception transitioned into a stunning clear-tent ballroom — one of those massive, permanent pavilion-style tents that felt both grand and intimate.

And here’s the thing that still gives me chills: they displayed photos of Death Valley at the reception. Three of my favorite shots from their desert session were on display for all their guests to see — the stars, the sand dunes, and the sunrise. It was like a window into a completely different world, right there in the middle of a 150-person celebration.

The Transformation

After their engagement session, Eunice and Doohyun told me something that perfectly captures why this hybrid approach works: getting those dream adventure photos felt like a massive weight had been lifted. On their wedding day, they didn’t feel any pressure to “make it their own” — because they’d already done that in the desert. Instead, they could just be present. They laughed freely with their friends and family. They soaked in every moment. There was no stress about the photos, no pressure to perform — just pure, genuine joy.

That freedom is exactly why they moved their wedding date to accommodate my schedule. After the engagement session, they knew they wanted me there for the full journey.

And that’s the magic of doing both. The adventure session gives you your moment. The wedding gives your family theirs. And together, you get the complete love story.

How to Plan Your Adventure Engagement Session

Ready to make this happen? Here’s what I recommend:

Timing: 3–6 Months Before the Wedding

This sweet spot gives you enough time to use the adventure photos for save-the-dates, reception displays, or even your wedding website. Plus, it builds that photographer-couple trust well before the big day.

Locations: My Favorite Spots

I specialize in the Southwest US, and these are the places where the magic happens:

  • Death Valley — Sunrise on the sand dunes, the cracked earth of Badwater Basin, and golden-hour salt flats that stretch to infinity. [Link to Death Valley location guide]
  • Yosemite — Glacier Point, Taft Point, and meadows framed by granite giants. [Link to Yosemite guide]
  • Zion National Park — Red rock canyons, dramatic overlooks, and hidden trails that feel like another planet.
  • Joshua Tree National Park — Iconic desert landscapes, twisted trees, and boulders that glow at golden hour. Perfect for couples who want that rugged, otherworldly desert vibe.
  • Sedona — Warm red rocks, desert light, and a spiritual energy that couples absolutely love.

Attire: Go All Out

I always encourage couples to wear actual wedding attire — or at least a second dress or a beautiful suit. This is what makes it feel like a true elopement experience rather than a casual shoot. If you’re willing to let the dress get a little sandy, a little windswept, a little lived in — the photos will be absolutely breathtaking.

Don’t worry about keeping it pristine. The best adventure photos happen when you stop worrying about the dress and start living in the moment.

Do You Need Photo and Video for Both?

Here’s something worth considering: capturing highlight video clips during your adventure session can create an incredible film to play at your traditional wedding reception.

Imagine your guests watching footage of the two of you hiking through a canyon at sunrise, laughing on a mountaintop, spinning in the desert wind — all set to music. There won’t be a dry eye in the room.

I offer hybrid photo and video coverage for exactly this reason. One photographer, both mediums, one cohesive story. [Link to Photo and Video Hybrid Coverage post]

You Don’t Have to Compromise

If you’ve been feeling like you have to pick between the wedding your family wants and the photos your heart wants — take a breath. You can have both. You can honor your heritage, celebrate with your community, make your parents proud, and stand on top of a mountain in a wedding dress watching the sun come up.

That’s not a compromise. That’s the full picture of who you are.

And honestly? That’s the kind of love story worth telling.
